"I just want to let other veterans know to check their accounts and make sure this doesn't happen to them. Everybody's got bills, everybody's got things they need their money for," said David Stephenson. Just a few days before David and Aubrey Stephenson left town for a wedding, someone had accessed David's ebenefits account and changed his direct deposit. David had no idea until the VA sent him a letter a few days later. The letter stated that his direct deposit request had been processed and instructed him to call a 1-800 number if there were any problems. "Well, they shouldn't be able to change my contact info and my direct deposit. You should have to do that in person. I believe that should definitely be done in person," David said. Without any apparent safeguards, the hacker was able to easily reroute David's check to an out-of-state bank.
